About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a User Researcher with Active SC to work for our client within the public sector. This is initially a 6-month contract with the potential to extend and will be a remote role with occasional travel into London or Manchester.

We are seeking a highly skilled User Researcher to lead the discovery and validation of user needs across data handling and classification processes. This role will play a critical part in ensuring the implementation of data labelling and classification frameworks is intuitive, user-centric, and aligned with real-world behaviours. You will collaborate closely with business analysts, product teams, and key stakeholders to uncover insights that shape a seamless and effective user experience.

Responsibilities 

  • Design and execute a comprehensive user research strategy across all phases of the project
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research including end-user interviews, surveys, and observational research
  • Partner with Business Analysts to review and map existing processes and user journeys
  • Develop deep insights into user understanding of data sensitivity and classification requirements
  • Analyse user behaviour patterns when handling, storing, and sharing data
  • Create and maintain detailed user personas focused on data handling behaviours
  • Capture user needs, motivations, friction points, and variations across roles and departments
  • Lead usability testing initiatives including pilot testing of classification and labelling approaches
  • Test and refine label naming, descriptions, and guidance through iterative feedback

About You

  • Applicants must hold active SC clearance and have worked within a government department within the past 12 months.
  • Proven experience in User Research, UX Research, or Human-Centred Design
  • Strong expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Experience conducting usability testing and translating findings into improvements
  • Ability to synthesise complex information into clear insights
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Experience in data, governance, compliance, or enterprise environments is desirable
