About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking an experienced NEC Project Manager to support a major infrastructure and construction client in the delivery of site-based projects across Birmingham. This role is a 6 month contract with good potential to extend and will require regular attendance on site in Birmingham, typically 3-4 days per week, with limited remote working flexibility.

You will play a key role in managing the safe and successful delivery of construction activities, working closely with contractors, site teams, commercial stakeholders, and project sponsors to ensure projects are delivered in line with programme objectives, contractual requirements, and health and safety standards. Operating within a live construction environment, you will lead project delivery activities on site, providing robust oversight of contractor performance, programme progress, risk management, and stakeholder engagement.

About the Role

We are seeking a Mid-Senior NEC Project Manager with strong construction delivery experience and a practical understanding of site operations and construction activities.

You will be responsible for managing projects throughout the delivery lifecycle, ensuring contractors perform against contractual obligations, programme milestones, budgetary requirements, and quality expectations. Working alongside construction managers, commercial teams, designers, contractors, and client stakeholders, you will drive delivery performance while maintaining strong governance and safety standards.

The successful candidate will be confident operating within challenging construction environments, capable of holding contractors to account, resolving delivery issues, and making informed decisions to keep projects on track.

This role requires a hands-on project manager who is comfortable spending significant time on site, engaging directly with delivery teams and contractor organisations to ensure successful project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing the delivery of construction and infrastructure projects from mobilisation through to completion
  • Acting as the NEC Project Manager and administering projects in accordance with NEC contract requirements
  • Monitoring contractor performance against programme, cost, quality, and safety objectives
  • Managing site-based delivery activities and ensuring works progress in line with agreed schedules
  • Challenging contractors where performance, quality, safety, or programme commitments are not being met
  • Coordinating contractors, consultants, client teams, and key stakeholders throughout delivery
  • Managing project governance, reporting, risks, issues, actions, and dependencies
  • Reviewing and approving contractor submissions, programmes, compensation events, and change requests
  • Supporting commercial teams with contract administration and project controls activities
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, industry standards, and site procedures
  • Conducting site inspections, progress reviews, and delivery assurance activities
  • Producing regular project reports and delivery updates for senior stakeholders
  • Facilitating project meetings, contractor reviews, and governance forums
  • Managing stakeholder expectations and maintaining effective communication throughout project delivery
  • Driving project performance to achieve successful delivery against scope, budget, and programme objectives

About You

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager delivering construction, infrastructure, civil engineering, utilities, or major capital projects
  • Practical understanding of construction site operations, sequencing, and delivery activities
  • Strong experience administering and managing NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts
  • Demonstrable experience managing contractors and subcontractors within live construction environments
  • Ability to challenge contractor performance and drive accountability for delivery outcomes
  • Experience managing project schedules, budgets, risks, issues, and change control processes
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across operational, technical, commercial, and executive teams
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution capabilities
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation, CDM requirements, and construction best practice
  • Strong planning, organisational, and project governance skills
  • Ability to interpret project documentation, construction programmes, and delivery reporting
  • Proficiency with project management and reporting tools

Nice to Have

  • Formal Project Management qualification such as APM PMQ, PRINCE2 Practitioner, or equivalent
  • NEC Project Manager accreditation or specialist NEC contract training
  • Experience delivering projects within regulated or safety-critical environments
  • Knowledge of compensation event management and contract change mechanisms
  • Experience overseeing multidisciplinary construction teams
  • Familiarity with infrastructure, rail, utilities, highways, defence, or public-sector capital programmes
  • SMSTS, CSCS, or other relevant site-based qualifications
  • Experience leading contractor performance improvement initiatives
  • Degree qualification in Construction Management, Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced NEC Project Manager who enjoys working close to delivery, understands the realities of a live construction site, and has the confidence to manage and challenge contractors to achieve successful project outcomes.
