About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Mainframe Developer to work for our client within the Financial Service sector. This is initially a 6 month contract with very good prospects to extend and will be a Hybrid role that will be based in either the clients Bromley or Chester office.

Our client is seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to join a major banking client within the GBS engineering team. You will work as part of an Agile squad to maintain, enhance, and modernise core mainframe systems that underpin high availability banking services. This role requires hands on technical expertise across COBOL-based development, IMS environments, and z/OS tooling.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy mainframe changes across core banking applications.
  • Work collaboratively within Agile teams, participating in stand ups, sprint planning, code reviews, and retrospectives. 
  • Troubleshoot, optimise, and improve existing COBOL, Mark IV, and REXX codebases.
  • Support IMS TM, IMS DB, and related transaction and screen flows.
  • Ensure code quality, stability, and compliance with internal engineering standards.
  • Use modernised mainframe tooling (IDz, Git/Bitbucket, CI/CD frameworks) to enhance development efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams including QA, platform engineering, analysis, and operations.

About You

  • Strong commercial experience developing in COBOL on IBM mainframe platforms.
  • Good understanding of IMS DB and IMS TM.
  • Experience working in Agile teams with modern engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with IDz or equivalent z/OS development tooling.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate clearly, and operate in a hybrid-working environment.
  • Minimum number of 5 years’ experience in - COBOL- based development
