About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a PMO Manager / Head of PMO to work for our client within the defence and engineering sector. This is initially a 6 month contract with very good prospects to extend and will be a hybrid role that will be based primarily in Crawley, with flexibility for candidates based in Bristol or Reading.

Our client is seeking a senior PMO professional to take on a critical leadership role within a long-term, complex shipbuilding programme. The programme is already in a mature and stable phase, with governance and reporting structures established. The successful candidate will act as the right hand to the Project Director, leading the project controls and PMO function while ensuring delivery excellence across planning, reporting, and risk management. The role requires strong stakeholder management, leadership of a culturally diverse team, and the ability to operate across multiple workstreams in a high-profile environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the PMO and project controls team, ensuring effective delivery of planning, reporting, and governance activities
  • Oversee project controls including scheduling, cost control, risk and issue management, and change control processes
Act as a strategic partner to the Project Director, supporting decision-making through accurate data, insights and reporting
  • Ensure consistency and quality in programme reporting, data management, and communications across stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement within PMO processes while maintaining established governance frameworks

About You

  • Strong background in project controls and project management within complex programmes
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams, ideally in a multi-disciplinary or international environment
  • Experience with project controls tools such as Primavera (P6) and reporting systems
Strong understanding of risk management, change control, governance, and programme reporting
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence senior leadership
  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in project controls, PMO leadership, or programme management
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to be on-site in Crawley 3 days per week
  • Willingness to travel for monthly co-location in Crawley and bi-monthly 3-day trips to the Netherlands
  • Experience within defence, engineering, or highly regulated environments is advantageous
  • Candidates must be eligible for security clearance (SC)
