This position requires the successful candidate to work on a W2 directly with FDM. We cannot accept C2C, 1099 or employment sponsorship (e.g. H1-B) for this position.

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy delivering client and industry driven solutions through our 5 core specialist Practices; Software Engineering, Data & Analytics, IT Operations, Change & Transformation, and Risk, Regulation & Compliance.

FDM is seeking a IT Project Manager located in Charlotte to support a project in the Financial Services sector. Involvement in this project is anticipated to last initially 18-months but may be extended.

This role will be <hybrid> with requirements to be in office days per week.

About You

Seeking a Technical Project Manager to own portfolio-level risk management across multiple programs and projects. The ideal candidate blends hands-on technical depth with structured risk methodologies – FMEA (Failure Modes & Effects Analysis) – to proactively identify, quantify, and mitigate risks that impact delivery, reliability, security, and business outcomes. You will establish the portfolio risk operating model, drive cross-team mitigation and decision-making, and provide executive-ready visibility of residual risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and run a portfolio-wide risk management framework, integrating FMEA with existing governance.
  • Build and maintain a central risk register with owners and due dates and FMEA scoring.
  • Translate FMEA outputs into concrete mitigation plans.
  • Collaborate with delivery managers and product owners to surface failure modes.
  • Own risk dashboards and executive briefings.
  • Establish leading indicators (early warning signals) and improve observability for proactive detection.
  • Benchmark and continually improve risk maturity across the portfolio.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 10+ years managing complex technical projects/programs in software engineering, platforms, data/AI, or cloud.
  • Demonstrated experience leading FMEA or similar structured risk methods.
  • Strong understanding of modern software delivery (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, cloud-native architectures, APIs).
  • Ability to synthesize technical risk into executive-ready narratives with clear tradeoffs and asks.
  • Excellent facilitation: cross-functional workshops, root cause analysis, and conflict resolution.
  • Domain experience in regulated environments (e.g., financial services) and partnering with Security, Risk, and Compliance.

Key Responsibilities by Outcome

Within 90 Days

  • Stand up the portfolio risk register and FMEA cadence for critical programs.
  • Produce the first risk heatmap and top 10 risks with assigned owners and target dates.
  • Baseline key metrics (e.g., % risks with mitigations, average RPN, top systemic risks).

Ongoing (Quarterly)

  • Reduce high RPN items by ≥ X% quarter-over-quarter.
  • Improve detection coverage (monitoring/alerting) for top failure modes.
  • Integrate risk posture into quarterly planning and release readiness.

Annually

  • Demonstrate improvements in change failure rate, and incident recurrence.
  • Increase portfolio risk maturity.
