About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Java / Scala Developer to work for our client within the Investment Banking / Financial Services sector. This is initially a 12‑month contract with the potential to extend and will be a hybrid role that will be based in London.

Our client is undertaking a large‑scale renovation of their Prime Brokerage and Securities Finance Technology estate, building a new consolidated platform for trade capture and post‑trade processing across multiple Securities Finance transaction types. This is a high‑impact delivery role within a critical programme replacing legacy systems, where the successful candidate will be expected to contribute quickly and operate with minimal hand‑holding.

Responsibilities:

Contribute to the design and build of a new consolidated Trade Capture and Post‑Trade Processing platform for Securities Finance transactions (Repo, Securities Lending, Buy/Sell Backs).
Develop and enhance backend services using Java and Scala, contributing to both greenfield build and migration from legacy systems.
Participate in architecture and system design discussions, including breaking down problems and justifying technical design decisions.
Build and maintain mission‑critical applications and GUIs used by front‑office, trading, and middle‑office users.
Work collaboratively within an Agile development squad, delivering high‑quality, well‑tested code in a fast‑paced environment.
Review and validate AI‑assisted development output (e.g. Copilot), acting as a quality gate to ensure correctness and robustness.
Support the modelling and migration of Securities Finance transaction data into the new platform.
Engage with peers and stakeholders to troubleshoot issues, improve system design, and contribute to delivery best practices.

About You

Strong foundation in core Java development; Scala is used extensively within the team, but prior Scala experience is not mandatory if the candidate can demonstrate the ability to pick it up quickly.
Solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and core software engineering principles.
Proven architecture and system design capability, including ability to decompose problems and articulate design rationale.
Experience building and supporting production systems in a high‑pressure delivery environment.
Working knowledge of SQL / relational databases.
Experience working in Agile environments, including exposure to automated testing and DevOps practices/tools.
Comfortable working in an AI‑assisted development environment (e.g. GitHub Copilot) and reviewing generated output critically.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within distributed engineering teams.
Minimum of 4+ years’ experience in backend software development using Java within an enterprise or regulated environment.
