About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work for our client within the Technology / E-Commerce sector. This is initially a 6-month contract with the potential to extend and will be a fully remote role that will be based in the UK, with occasional travel to London.

Our client is a global leader in industrial components and technology solutions. Their UK engineering team is undergoing significant platform investment, and this role sits within their Data Graph & Content team- a central platform function responsible for the federated GraphQL architecture and data layer consumed by engineering teams across the organisation. The successful candidate will join a high-autonomy team with real influence over architectural direction, shaping the services and standards used across the wider engineering function.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and operate federated GraphQL architecture including schema design, subgraph ownership, schema governance and performance optimisation
  • Build and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js within a microservices architecture, applying strong service boundary and communication pattern principles
  • Design and deliver serverless solutions on AWS, applying cloud architecture best practices across the full infrastructure lifecycle
  • Own CI/CD pipelines end to end- build, test and deploy automation, quality gates, and environment promotion
  • Implement and maintain a mature testing approach including unit, integration and end-to-end test suites
  • Collaborate with engineering teams across the organisation to ensure the data graph and content APIs meet the needs of internal consumers
  • Contribute to the technical direction of the team, including tooling decisions, ways of working, and DevOps practices
  • Work with Headless CMS (Contentful) as a content data source, integrating it into the wider graph architecture

About You

  • Strong commercial experience with Node.js development in a backend or platform engineering context
  • Proven hands-on experience designing and implementing Federated GraphQL architectures using Apollo Federation, including schema design, subgraph ownership and performance considerations
  • Strong experience designing and operating solutions on AWS, applying cloud architecture best practices (Lambda, ECS, API Gateway, CloudFront)
  • Solid understanding of microservice architecture - service boundaries, communication patterns and operational concerns
  • Experience designing and delivering serverless solutions on AWS
  • Proven experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD practices including build/test/deploy automation and quality gates
  • Demonstrated ability to implement a mature testing approach including unit tests and end-to-end automated test suites
  • Solid understanding of DevOps processes and ways of working
  • Experience with Headless CMS, specifically Contentful
  • Knowledge of Rust and experience with Rhai (embedded scripting for Rust) is highly desirable
  • ECS experience is highly desirable given the client's current infrastructure migration
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a backend or platform software engineering role
