About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Test Engineer to work for our client within the public sector. This is initially a 6-month contract with the potential to extend and will be a hybrid role that will be based in Manchester

We are seeking a highly motivated and technically capable Test Engineer to join an Agile delivery team, ensuring quality is embedded throughout the software development lifecycle. The successful candidate will combine strong manual testing expertise with modern test automation skills, working collaboratively with developers, product teams, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions.

This role requires a proactive mindset, excellent analytical thinking, and the ability to contribute to quality activities from requirements through to production support. The Test Engineer will be expected to understand the wider technical landscape, identify risks early, design effective test strategies, and drive continuous improvement in testing practices.
 
Key Responsibilites: 
  • Champion quality throughout the software development lifecycle and actively contribute within Agile delivery teams.
  • Engage early in requirements, design and development discussions to identify risks, clarify assumptions and influence quality outcomes.
  • Design, execute and maintain effective manual and automated testing strategies aligned to business and technical requirements.
  • Develop, maintain and enhance automated test frameworks and test suites using Playwright and TypeScript.
  • Analyse requirements and translate them into comprehensive test scenarios, test cases and test coverage plans.
  • Perform exploratory, functional, integration, regression and end-to-end testing activities.
  • Conduct API testing and validation, including GraphQL and related service integrations.
  • Investigate defects, perform root cause analysis and produce clear, actionable bug reports.
  • Review system architecture, infrastructure and lower-level test coverage to ensure appropriate quality assurance across the solution.
  • Troubleshoot issues using logs, application monitoring tools and cloud-based diagnostics.
  • Design and execute performance testing activities, analyse results and identify performance bottlenecks and improvement opportunities.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, quality engineering best practices and continuous improvement initiatives across the team.

About You

  • EngineerStrong understanding of modern software testing principles, Agile delivery practices and quality engineering approaches.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, self-sufficiency, problem-solving ability and excellent communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify risks, edge cases and failure scenarios.
  • Experience creating effective test scenarios, test cases and test documentation from functional and technical requirements.
  • Strong programming skills in TypeScript and experience working with test automation frameworks.
  • Proven experience using Playwright for automated testing of web applications.
  • Good understanding of APIs, including request/response validation, GraphQL and service integrations.
  • Experience working with React, Next.js and modern web application architectures.
  • Knowledge of AWS services, including serverless technologies, Lambda and EC2, with the ability to understand end-to-end system architecture.
  • Experience investigating issues through logs, command-line tools and monitoring platforms.
  • Understanding of CI/CD concepts and experience working with GitHub Actions pipelines.
  • Experience or knowledge of performance testing, K6, CloudWatch, Grafana, Terraform, networking fundamentals and data analysis tools such as Python.
