About The Role

This position requires the successful candidate to work on a W2 directly with FDM. We cannot accept C2C, 1099 or employment sponsorship (e.g. H1-B) for this position.

FDM is seeking a Reliability & Production Engineer located in New York, NY to support a project in the Financial sector. Involvement in this project is anticipated to last initially 2 years but may be extended.

This role will be hybrid with requirements to be in office 3-4 days per week.

About You

Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Reliability & Production Engineer to support our US Equities Alternative Trading Systems (ATSs) and internal crossing platforms, including MSPOOL, RPOOL, MSTX, MSLC, and other related venues.
Support responsibilities include operational ownership of ATS environments, incident management, production stability, regulatory readiness, and close partnership with traders, quants, developers, and compliance teams.
The successful candidate will operate at the intersection of trading, market structure, technology, and regulatory compliance, acting as both a technical expert and trusted partner to the business. This role offers direct exposure to US equity market mechanics, alternative trading systems, order routing, auction processes, and electronic execution strategies.

Key Responsibilities

ATS & Crossing Platform Support

  • Monitor real-time order flow, matching activity, execution quality, client connectivity, and venue health.
  • Investigate and resolve trading issues, including:
    • Order rejects
    • Missing executions
    • Crossing eligibility issues
    • Market data discrepancies
    • Trade reporting issues
    • Regulatory restrictions
  • Serve as the primary escalation point during production incidents impacting clients, traders, and crossing venues.

Market Structure & ATS Expertise

  • Develop deep knowledge of:
    • US equity market structure
    • Alternative Trading Systems (ATSs)
    • Dark pools and internalization
    • Exchange auctions
    • Regulation ATS and Reg SCI considerations
    • NMS securities and routing behavior
    • Short sale restrictions and regulatory controls
  • Understand and troubleshoot crossing behavior involving:
    • Midpoint crosses
    • Conditional indications
    • Auction benchmark crosses
    • Principal vs. agency restrictions
    • Client-specific crossing preferences
    • Symbol-level restrictions and controls
  • Partner with trading desks and quantitative teams to analyze execution outcomes, crossing opportunities, and venue behavior.

Operational Excellence

  • Proactively monitor trading applications, matching engines, market data feeds, and connectivity.
  • Lead incident management efforts from detection through resolution and postmortem review.
  • Drive root cause analysis and implement preventive controls to improve platform resiliency.
  • Create and maintain operational runbooks, dashboards, and support procedures.
  • Participate in periodic failover, disaster recovery, capacity, and regulatory testing exercises.

Automation & Engineering

  • Build automation and tooling to improve observability, diagnostics, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop solutions using:
    • Python
    • SQL/KDB
    • Linux/Unix tooling
    • Monitoring and alerting systems
  • Collaborate with development teams to improve application design, resiliency, and production supportability.
  • Leverage data analytics to identify trends in venue performance, crossing rates, and system behavior.

Regulatory & Compliance Support

  • Assist Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit teams with:
    • Trading inquiries
    • Investigations
    • User permissions
    • Regulatory reviews
    • Best execution analyses
  • Support controls and reporting requirements related to ATS operations and electronic trading.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong Linux/Unix administration and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience supporting distributed real-time applications in a production environment.
  • Familiarity with:
    • FIX protocol
    • Market data systems
  • Proficiency in Python or another scripting language.
  • SQL and database query experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting electronic trading systems, exchange connectivity, or brokerage platforms.
  • Understanding of US equities market structure and the order lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with:
    • ATSs and dark pools
    • Crossing engines
    • Smart Order Routing (SOR)
    • Algorithmic trading
    • Opening and closing auctions
    • Regulation NMS, Reg ATS, and Reg SCI
  • Experience with KDB, Java, Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, or similar monitoring technologies.
  • Understanding of Agile software delivery practices.
