About The Role

FDM is seeking an Application Support Engineer (Linux) to work for our client in the Financial Services sector. This is an initial 12‑month contract with potential extension, operating in a high-pressure, production-critical environment within a predominantly Linux-based ecosystem. The role will be hybrid and based in Johannesburg.
 
 Responsibilities:
 
  • Provide Level 1 production support in a Red Hat Linux-based environment
  • Perform SQL queries for incident and problem resolution
  • Diagnose and triage issues, escalating where required
  • Execute basic network checks using ping, telnet, and related tools
  • Support automation and cron-based scheduling tasks
  • Own incidents end-to-end, ensuring timely resolution
  • Communicate effectively with traders and technical teams
  • Handle onboarding tasks, password resets, and low-complexity tickets

About You

Requirements:
 
  • 1+ year hands-on Linux experience in a live operational environment
  • Working knowledge of SQL (Sybase, Oracle or similar)
  • Prior experience in production support or desktop/app support
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Basic networking knowledge (topologies, connectivity checks)
  • Exposure to scripting languages such as Python or JavaScript
  • Ability to work under pressure with a strong sense of urgency
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall grade of 60% in STEM degree
  • Eligibility to work in South Africa
  • English level B2 or higher
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work in a team
  • Demonstrable interest and desire to work in technology
