About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Java Lead Developer to work for our client within the Financial Services sector. This is initially a 12‑month contract with strong prospects to extend and will be a hybrid role based in Cheshire.

Our client is seeking an experienced Java Lead Developer to join a major transformation programme within their Pensions line of business. The role will focus on building and enhancing scalable, secure and resilient services across a modern microservices architecture, supporting key strategic change initiatives across the pensions product suite.

Responsibilities:
 
  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of Java-based microservices using Spring Boot.
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs supporting core pensions servicing and processing.
  • Oversee containerised deployments using Docker within Linux environments.
  • Implement and integrate event-driven components using Kafka across distributed systems.
  • Collaborate with architects, product owners and SMEs to ensure robust, scalable technical solutions.

About You

  • Extensive hands-on experience in Java backend development, specialising in REST API and microservices architectures.
  • Advanced experience with Spring Boot, Docker, Linux, MongoDB, and Kafka.
  • Proven background leading technical teams, owning solution design, and guiding best practices.
  • Strong understanding of event-driven architecture, distributed systems, and API-first principles.
  • Minimum 8-10+ years’ experience in backend Java engineering or similar roles within complex environments.
