About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a User Researcher to work for our client within the rail sector. This is initially a 6 month contract with the potential to extend and will be a hybrid role that will be based in York, with 3 days per week in the office.

Our client is seeking support to strengthen their User Research strategic capability during a period of accelerated delivery. With their in‑house User Researcher currently on long-term leave, they require an experienced specialist who can lead end‑to‑end research activity, provide hands‑on insight generation, and help develop a scalable operating model for future capability.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design and deliver user research across multiple digital workstreams
  • Conduct a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods, including discovery interviews, usability testing, surveys and contextual research.
  • Translate research findings into clear, actionable insights for product, design and engineering teams.
  • Support development of research frameworks, processes and tools to enhance strategic capability
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure user needs inform product decisions and delivery.
  • Manage participant recruitment, consent, documentation and research governance.
  • Champion inclusive design and accessibility within all research activity.

About You

  • Proven experience delivering end‑to‑end user research within digital product environments.
  • Strong knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods, including interviews, usability testing, surveys and contextual research.
  • Ability to synthesise research findings into clear insights that inform product, UX and engineering decisions.
  • Experience working in Agile or dual‑track delivery teams
  • Proficiency with user research and collaboration tools such as Dovetail, Lookback, UserTesting, Miro and Figma.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in User Research or a similar UX research-focused role.
