About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Lead Developer (Java/AWS) to work for our client within the Public Sector sector. This is initially a 6 month contract with very good prospects to extend and will be a remote role that will be based UK-wide.

Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Developer to lead engineering delivery across a dual-track programme spanning a legacy Java platform and a new cloud-native AWS service. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity where you will drive technical delivery, improve engineering standards, enhance team collaboration and lead low-level design across both modern and legacy environments. Working closely with architects, principal developers and stakeholders, you will play a key role in shaping engineering practices, supporting delivery outcomes and raising team capability.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead engineering delivery across legacy and cloud-native workstreams, ensuring alignment with technical and business objectives.
  • Drive low-level design quality by producing and reviewing robust, maintainable and scalable technical solutions.
  • Collaborate with architects, principal developers and stakeholders to support delivery and technical decision-making.
  • Mentor and support engineers, improving team capability, collaboration and engineering best practices.
  • Promote secure, compliant and cost-effective development practices, particularly across AWS-based services.

About You

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and providing hands-on technical leadership within complex delivery environments.
  • Strong Java development expertise, including Java 8+ and Spring Boot, with experience translating architecture into implementable solutions.
  • Practical AWS experience, including services such as Lambda, S3 and GuardDuty, with an understanding of cost-conscious cloud design.
  • Experience working with Docker, SQL and MongoDB in enterprise-scale environments

Desirable: Experience with agentic engineering and AI-assisted software development practices, including tools such as GitHub Copilot, alongside exposure to PostgreSQL, Node.js/TypeScript, Kubernetes, Terraform and modern automated testing frameworks such as Karate, Cucumber or Playwright.
